Auktorisoitu kääntäjä, laillisesti pätevä käännös and the Georgian notarized translation
Under Finland's Act on Authorized Translators, an auktorisoitu kääntäjä has passed the examination administered by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus) for a specific language pair and direction and is entered in the agency's register, and a translation they certify is laillisesti pätevä - legally valid - and accepted by every Finnish authority; authorization is also granted on the basis of certain university translation degrees. Finnish authorities are pragmatic beyond that: Migri, DVV, universities and most agencies accept documents in Finnish, Swedish or English, accept translations by a qualified translator with a certification for most purposes, and accept translations made abroad when they are legalized or apostilled, reserving the authorized requirement for specific cases such as Valvira's healthcare authorization, Opetushallitus's formal recognition decisions, court proceedings and some DVV registrations. No authorized translator exists for Georgian, so even offices that require authorization accept an authorized translator for English certifying a translation reviewed against the Georgian source. Georgia has no sworn-translator register; the official form here is the translation notarized by a Georgian notary, who certifies the signature of a translator registered as competent in Finnish.
We translate the Georgian original into Finnish or English here, notarize it, apostille the original and, where a Finnish office asks for authorization, forward the text to a partner authorized translator in Helsinki who re-certifies it. A Finnish authorized translation is, from Georgia's point of view, a foreign document; for use in Georgia the translation must be notarized here.
Migri: specialists, skilled workers, students and family members
The Finnish Immigration Service (Maahanmuuttovirasto, Migri) decides residence permits for Georgians as specialists (erityisasiantuntija, with a salary threshold), as employees under the työntekijän oleskelulupa route with a partial decision by the employment office, as entrepreneurs and startup founders, as students admitted to Finnish institutions, as researchers, and as family members of Finnish citizens and residents; applications are lodged through the Enter Finland portal with identification at a Finnish mission or a visa application center serving Georgia. Checklists require the Georgian passport and, by category, the employment contract and proof of qualifications, the admission letter, proof of funds and insurance for students, and for family reunification the apostilled marriage and birth certificates and evidence of the relationship; documents in Georgian must be translated into Finnish, Swedish or English, and civil status documents apostilled. Migri accepts certified translations for most of these and refers applicants to an authorized translator only in specific cases. We assemble the translated set to match Migri's list for your category, in English where the applicant and employer prefer it, with your name's transliteration identical across every document.
DVV: the population register, foreign marriages and the marriage impediment examination
The Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) is where foreign documents are examined most closely. A Georgian with a residence permit registers in the population information system at DVV with the passport and permit and receives a henkilötunnus; for family relationships to be recorded, the apostilled marriage and birth certificates are presented with translations, and DVV verifies foreign civil status documents carefully, sometimes asking for an authorized translation. Marriages concluded in Georgia are registered with DVV with the apostilled Georgian certificate and translation. Georgians marrying in Finland go through DVV's avioliiton esteiden tutkinta (examination of impediments to marriage), which requires the Georgian birth certificate, a certificate of marital status and, if previously married, divorce decisions, all apostilled and translated, after which DVV issues the esteettömyystodistus that the registrar or the church needs, valid for four months. Name changes after marriage, and the registration of children born in Georgia to Finnish residents, use the same agency. We prepare these sets for DVV's requirements and arrange authorized re-certification where a caseworker asks for it.
Opetushallitus, universities, Valvira and the courts
The Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus) recognizes foreign qualifications for regulated professions and public-sector eligibility and issues assessments of foreign higher education degrees, requiring certified translations of apostilled documents and authorized translations for its formal decisions; universities accept certified translations for admission. Valvira, which authorizes doctors, dentists, nurses and other healthcare professionals, requires authorized translations of diplomas, curricula and practice records for its route for professionals trained outside the EU/EEA, which we arrange. Finnish courts (käräjäoikeudet) and the notaries at DVV require authorized or legalized translations of apostilled documents. For all of these we prepare the Finnish or English text and arrange authorized re-certification where required.
Finnish documents for Georgian authorities
Any Finnish-language document used in Georgia must be translated into Georgian and notarized here. The most frequent are passi and henkilökortti (translated from a photo, no visit needed), the virkatodistus or ote väestötietojärjestelmästä from DVV (or from the parish for church members) that serves as Finland's birth, marriage and family certificate in one document, vihkitodistus, the rikosrekisteriote from the Legal Register Centre (Oikeusrekisterikeskus) for residence permits, tutkintotodistus and opintosuoritusote for work permits and recognition, kaupparekisteriote from the Patent and Registration Office (PRH), yhtiöjärjestys and valtakirja for company registration, työsopimus and tiliote for proof of income, and todistukset from Kela, Vero and the municipality. Finnish public documents must carry DVV's apostille before the translation is notarized; Swedish-language documents from Åland and Swedish-speaking municipalities are handled with our Swedish team. We also offer e-Notary certification with a qualified electronic signature.
Certified translation without notarization, and when it is enough
Not every recipient needs the notary or the authorized stamp. Finnish universities for admission, employers, landlords, insurers and online portals accept a certified translation with our agency stamp and translator statement, and Migri accepts it for most permit types, which is quicker and cheaper. DVV for some registrations, Valvira, Opetushallitus for formal decisions, courts, Georgian courts, registries, the Public Service Hall and banks do not. Tell us who will receive the document and we recommend the right level; a certified translation can be upgraded to a notarized and re-certified one later without re-translating. For clients who submit everything online - Enter Finland, Studyinfo, university portals - we issue digitally signed PDFs, and we print, stamp and courier the same file when paper is required.
