Apostille and Legalization Between Georgia and Croatia - Authorities, Sequence and Timing

Both countries are Hague members, so a single apostille does the job in either direction - but Croatia issues apostilles through its municipal courts, Croatian offices require sworn translations, and seasonal work permits run on the calendar of the Adriatic season. We handle it from David Agmashenebeli Ave 117.

Apostille replaces legalization between Georgia and Croatia

Croatia is a Hague Apostille member by succession from Yugoslavia and Georgia joined in 2007, so a public document from either country is recognized in the other once apostilled by the issuing country's competent authority. No embassy step is needed in either direction. Croatia is accredited to Georgia from an embassy in the region and Georgia to Croatia likewise; what the embassies handle is visas where required, the registration of their citizens' marriages and births abroad and consular certificates, which is separate from the apostille and presupposes apostilled originals.

Because Croatian offices require a sudski tumač translation rather than a legalized foreign one, the Georgian notarized translation itself usually does not need to be apostilled for Croatia; the sworn translator's certification replaces that function. Georgian offices require a Georgian notarized translation and do not care about Croatian certification of it.

Where Croatian documents get their apostille for Georgia

Croatia issues apostilles through the općinski sudovi (municipal courts) for documents issued by courts, javni bilježnici, matični uredi and other bodies in their territory - so rodni and vjenčani listovi, domovnice, uvjerenja, notarial punomoći and court decisions are apostilled at the municipal court of the place of issue, and in Zagreb at the Općinski građanski sud - and through the Ministry of Justice for certain categories and where the court route is not available. Diplomas from the University of Zagreb and other institutions are apostilled at the municipal court after verification by the institution where required. The uvjerenje o nekažnjavanju, issued by the municipal court itself or through e-Građani, is apostilled at the same court. Croatian citizens already in Georgia can obtain apostilles through a relative, a lawyer with a punomoć, or by post. We confirm the correct court for each document before you request it.

Apostille on Georgian documents for Croatia

Georgian documents going to Croatia are apostilled here, and this part we handle entirely. Civil status certificates and Public Service Hall extracts are apostilled through the Public Service Development Agency; notarial acts and court documents through the Ministry of Justice route; diplomas and school certificates through the education verification route, which is the slowest at up to five business days. You bring the original to Agmashenebeli 117 once, or a relative brings it, and we submit, track and collect the apostille, then translate the bundle into Croatian, notarize it and forward the text to a partner sudski tumač in Zagreb for re-certification. Clients and employers in Croatia receive the finished set by courier within two to three days of re-certification.

Documents most often apostilled between Georgia and Croatia

  • Dozvola za boravak i rad and seasonal permits: Georgian conviction certificate, diplomas and vocational certificates where the job requires them, marriage and birth certificates for family members.
  • Family reunification and marriage in Croatia: Georgian rodni list, marital status certificate, divorce decisions.
  • AZVO recognition and university admission: Georgian diplomas, supplements, school leaving certificates with national exam results.
  • For Georgian residence permits: Croatian uvjerenje o nekažnjavanju, rodni and vjenčani listovi, diplomas.
  • For company registration in Georgia: Croatian izvadci iz sudskog registra, društveni ugovori and punomoći.
  • Maritime and yachting: seafarer and crew certificates for Croatian shipping companies and marinas.
  • Succession and property: Georgian death certificates and inheritance certificates for Croatian javni bilježnici, Croatian rješenja o nasljeđivanju for Georgian notaries.

The sequence for Croatian files

  • Step 1: the Georgian original is apostilled by the competent Georgian authority.
  • Step 2: we translate the document and its apostille into Croatian and the translation is notarized.
  • Step 3: the text is re-certified by a partner sudski tumač in Zagreb, who binds it to the apostilled original or a certified copy.
  • Step 4: the bundle is delivered to you, your employer or the MUP.

Translating before apostilling leaves the apostille certificate untranslated and the file is returned; delivering in the wrong standard wastes a day. For employer groups we run all candidates' documents through the sequence in parallel so the group's files are ready together before the season. We confirm the sequence in the first reply based on the receiving office.

Timing, validity and common errors

Apostilles on Georgian civil status documents usually take one to three business days; notarial acts and court documents about the same; education documents up to five. Add 1-2 hours for the translation and a few days for sudski tumač re-certification in Croatia. Croatian municipal court apostilles typically take a few days, longer in Zagreb. Croatian matični uredi want civil status documents less than six months old, and the uvjerenje o nekažnjavanju and the Georgian conviction certificate are accepted for a limited period, so timing matters, especially for seasonal workers whose permits must be in place before May. The errors we correct most often are an untranslated apostille certificate, a document apostilled at the wrong municipal court, a marital status certificate obtained too early, a Georgian document in a maiden name that differs from the passport, Croatian diacritics transliterated inconsistently into Georgian, a Serbian ekavian or Cyrillic text sent to a Croatian office, and a bundle unstapled for scanning, which both countries' offices treat as invalid. Send photos of both sides of every page and we run this check before submitting.

Croatian translation - frequently asked questions

Where do I apostille my Croatian uvjerenje o nekažnjavanju?+
At the općinski sud of the place of issue, or the Općinski građanski sud in Zagreb. We confirm the correct court for your document.
Does the notarized Croatian translation need its own apostille?+
Usually not, because the sudski tumač re-certification replaces it. Where a Croatian office accepts a legalized foreign translation instead, we apostille it in Georgia.
How long does apostille plus Croatian translation take for a birth certificate?+
Translation in 1-2 hours; apostille on the original in one to three business days; sudski tumač re-certification a few days. A complete bundle typically reaches Croatia within ten days.
Can you run a hotel group's seasonal workers in parallel before the season?+
Yes. All candidates' apostilles, translations and re-certifications are processed together so the group's files are ready on the same date, and we advise starting in February for a May start.
