Marital Status and Residence Certificate Translation - For Marrying Abroad, Registering a Foreign Spouse and Proving Where You Live

Two modest certificates open two important doors. The certificate of marital status proves you are free to marry, and every registry abroad asks for it before a wedding; the residence certificate proves where you live, and banks, tax offices and immigration authorities ask for it constantly. We translate both into and from 49 languages, notarize and apostille them, and know each country's own version well enough to tell you which document to obtain.

The certificate of marital status: proving you are free to marry

A registrar marrying a foreigner must be satisfied that the person is not already married, and since no registry can check another country's records, every country asks for a certificate from the home country stating the person's marital status - single, divorced or widowed - issued recently. Georgia issues it through the Public Service Development Agency at any Public Service Hall as a certificate of marital status, usually the same day, in Georgian; for use abroad it is apostilled by the Agency in one to three business days and translated into the language of the registry, and many registries want the notarized translation apostilled as well. Georgians marry abroad in large numbers - in Denmark and Cyprus for the simplicity of the procedure, in Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Poland and Greece where they live and work, in Turkey and Israel, in Kazakhstan and the Gulf - and each registry has its own name for what it wants: the Italian nulla osta, the German Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (which Germany asks foreign authorities to issue and, when they cannot, replaces with a court exemption), the French certificat de capacité à mariage or certificat de célibat, the Spanish certificado de estado civil, the Danish and Finnish marriage impediment examinations, the Israeli single status affidavit. We translate the Georgian certificate into the form each registry expects and tell you when a registry wants a sworn statement in addition.

Foreign single status documents for marriage in Georgia

Georgia has become a place where foreigners marry - each other, and Georgians - because the House of Justice registers a marriage quickly, often the same day, on the basis of the passports and a document proving each foreign spouse is free to marry, apostilled or legalized in the issuing country and translated into Georgian by a notarized translation. What that document is depends on the country: a certificate of no impediment or single status from a civil registry (Italy, Spain, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan), a population register extract showing marital status (Finland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands), a sworn affidavit before a notary or consul where the country issues no certificate (the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India), a letter of no impediment from a religious authority (Malaysian Muslims), a notarial certificate of marital status (China), or a divorce certificate or death certificate for the previously married. Our language teams tell each couple which document their country produces and how it must be legalized, and we translate it in 1-2 hours from the apostilled original, and attend the House of Justice as interpreters where a spouse does not speak Georgian.

The residence certificate: proving where you live

Proof of address is asked for more often than any other certificate after the passport, and by more different offices: banks opening accounts and reviewing compliance, tax authorities deciding residency and issuing tax residency certificates, immigration authorities registering an address, schools, insurers, courts and pension funds. Georgia issues a certificate of registered address (a residence certificate) through the Public Service Development Agency on the basis of the address registered with the Agency, and Georgians abroad present it, apostilled and translated, to foreign banks, tax offices and immigration authorities; foreigners in Georgia present the equivalent from home - the German Meldebescheinigung, the Italian certificato di residenza, the Spanish certificado de empadronamiento, the Polish zaświadczenie o zameldowaniu, the Dutch BRP extract, the Nordic population register extracts, the Kazakh and Uzbek address certificates, the Thai house registration - translated into Georgian for the same purposes. A residence certificate is often accepted in a simpler form than other certificates - a certified translation suffices for many banks and landlords - and we advise on the level each office requires.

Tax residency, banks and compliance

The residence certificate has become a compliance document. Georgian banks ask foreign clients for proof of address and, increasingly, for tax residency information; foreign banks ask Georgian clients for the same; and the tax residency certificate that the Georgian Revenue Service issues for treaty relief, and that foreign tax authorities issue to their residents, is presented abroad with a translation. Foreigners who spend more than 183 days in Georgia and become Georgian tax residents, remote workers and relocated professionals proving where they are taxed, and Georgians abroad proving they are no longer taxed in Georgia all need residence and tax residency certificates translated, notarized and, for foreign authorities, apostilled. We translate these with accountants on the team where they accompany financial documents, and we keep the address and name consistent with the rest of the client's file.

Validity windows and common errors

Both certificates age quickly. Registries accept a certificate of marital status for three to six months from issue, and some marriage impediment procedures, such as Denmark's and Finland's, expect it within a few months of the application; banks and immigration offices want a residence certificate issued within the last one to three months. The errors we correct most often are a marital status certificate obtained too early and expired before the wedding, a certificate in a maiden or former name that no longer matches the passport, a residence certificate showing an old address, a foreign single status document of a type the House of Justice does not accept (an unsworn letter, an expired affidavit), the apostille left untranslated, and a translation into the wrong language for the registry. We check every certificate for these before translating, tell you when to obtain it so that it is valid on the day it matters, and keep the names consistent with the passport.

Pricing, timing and how to order

Marital status and residence certificates are priced at a fixed rate per certificate, whatever the language, with a modest supplement for rare languages, plus the notary's fee; the apostille on a Georgian certificate is charged at the state fee plus handling, and a second apostille on the translation where a registry requires it. Translation takes 1-2 hours from the moment the certificate is with us; the apostille adds one to three business days.

To order, send a photo of the certificate and of any apostille on WhatsApp or Telegram, tell us the registry, bank or office and the country, and the quote arrives within 15 minutes with the level and sequence we recommend and, for a wedding, the date by which the certificate should be issued. Bring the original to Agmashenebeli 117, near Marjanishvili Metro, when the translation is ready, or courier it from any city; clients abroad have a relative obtain the Georgian certificate, and we apostille, translate, notarize and ship by DHL. Delivery is by scan when the notary signs, by collection, by same-day courier in Tbilisi or by courier anywhere.
