Statsautorisert translatør, bekreftet oversettelse and the Georgian notarized translation

In Norway a statsautorisert translatør has passed the translatøreksamen administered by NHH in Bergen for a specific language pair and is authorized by the Ministry of Education and Research; a statsautorisert oversettelse bears the translator's stamp and signature. Norwegian authorities are pragmatic: the UDI, Skatteetaten and most agencies accept translations into Norwegian or English by a qualified translator with name, signature and contact details for most purposes, and reserve the statsautorisert requirement for specific cases such as Helsedirektoratet's healthcare authorization, court proceedings and some Folkeregister registrations. No statsautorisert translatør exists for Georgian, so even offices that prefer authorization accept a statsautorisert translatør for English certifying a translation reviewed against the Georgian source. Georgia has no sworn-translator register; the official form here is the translation notarized by a Georgian notary, who certifies the signature of a translator registered with that notary as competent in Norwegian.

We translate the Georgian original into Norwegian or English here, notarize it, apostille the original, and where a Norwegian office asks for authorization, forward the text to a partner statsautorisert translatør in Oslo who re-certifies it. A Norwegian statsautorisert oversettelse is, from Georgia's point of view, a foreign document; for use in Georgia the translation must be notarized here.

The UDI: skilled workers, family immigration and students

The Utlendingsdirektoratet (UDI) decides residence permits for Georgians as faglærte (skilled workers) with a concrete job offer, as seasonal workers, as students admitted to Norwegian institutions, and as family members of Norwegian citizens and residents; applications are lodged through the UDI's online portal and documents handed in at the Norwegian embassy accredited to Georgia or a visa application center. Checklists require the Georgian passport and, by category, the employment contract and proof of qualifications for skilled workers, the admission letter and proof of funds for students, and for family immigration the apostilled marriage and birth certificates and evidence of the relationship; translations into Norwegian or English are required for documents in Georgian, and apostilles on civil status documents. The UDI accepts certified translations for most of these and refers applicants to a statsautorisert translatør only in specific cases. We assemble the translated set to match the UDI's list for your category, in English where the applicant and employer prefer it, with your name's transliteration identical across every document.

Skatteetaten and the Folkeregister: fødselsnummer, D-nummer and marriage

Skatteetaten's population register is where foreign documents are examined most closely. On arrival, a Georgian with a residence permit registers at the Skatteetaten ID-kontroll office with the passport and permit and receives a fødselsnummer, or a D-nummer for shorter stays; for family relationships to be recorded, the apostilled marriage certificate and children's birth certificates are presented with translations, and Skatteetaten verifies foreign civil status documents carefully, sometimes asking for a statsautorisert translation. Marriages concluded in Georgia are registered in the Folkeregister with the apostilled Georgian certificate and translation, and Georgians marrying in Norway go through Skatteetaten's prøvingsattest procedure with the Georgian birth certificate, a marital status certificate and, if previously married, divorce decisions, all apostilled and translated. We prepare these sets for Skatteetaten's requirements and arrange authorized re-certification where a saksbehandler asks for it.

Norwegian documents for Georgian authorities

Any Norwegian-language document used in Georgia must be translated into Georgian and notarized here. The most frequent are pass, nasjonale ID-kort and førerkort (translated from a photo, no visit needed), fødselsattester, vigselsattester and Folkeregister utskrifter for marriage registration and family residence permits, the politiattest for residence permits, vitnemål for work permits and recognition, firmaattester from the Brønnøysundregistrene, vedtekter and fullmakter for company registration, arbeidsavtaler and kontoutskrifter for proof of income, and bekreftelser from NAV or Skatteetaten. Norwegian public documents must carry an apostille - from the Statsforvalteren for documents from public bodies, and from notarius publicus at the tingrett for notarial documents - before the translation is notarized. We also offer e-Notary certification with a qualified electronic signature.

Certified translation without notarization, and when it is enough

Not every recipient needs the notary or the statsautorisert stamp. Norwegian universities for admission, employers, landlords, insurers and online portals accept a certified translation with our agency stamp and translator statement, and the UDI accepts it for most permit types, which is quicker and cheaper. Skatteetaten for some registrations, Helsedirektoratet, courts, Georgian courts, registries, the Public Service Hall and banks do not. Tell us who will receive the document and we recommend the right level; a certified translation can be upgraded to a notarized and re-certified one later without re-translating. For clients who submit everything online - the UDI portal, Søknadsweb, HK-dir - we issue digitally signed PDFs, and we print, stamp and courier the same file when paper is required.

Norwegian translation - frequently asked questions

Can I use a statsautorisert oversettelse from Norway for a Georgian residence permit?+
Not on its own. Georgian authorities require notarization by a Georgian notary. We can have the Norwegian authorized translation reviewed and signed by our registered translator and notarized locally, which is cheaper than re-translating.
Should I translate into Norwegian or English for the UDI?+
Either is accepted. Many applicants and employers prefer English so both can read the file; we deliver whichever you choose, or both.
Skatteetaten asked for a statsautorisert translatør. What now?+
Send us the request; we forward our text to a partner statsautorisert translatør for English in Oslo who certifies it against the apostilled Georgian original, typically within a few days, without a second translation.
How long does a politiattest translation take?+
Once the apostilled politiattest is with us, 1-2 hours for the notarized Georgian translation.
