Apostille and Legalization Between Georgia and Serbia - Authorities, Sequence and Timing

Both countries are Hague members, so a single apostille does the job in either direction - but Serbia issues apostilles through its basic courts, Serbian offices require sworn translations in the right script, and worker files run on employer deadlines. We handle it from David Agmashenebeli Ave 117.

Apostille replaces legalization between Georgia and Serbia

Serbia is a Hague Apostille member by succession from Yugoslavia and Georgia joined in 2007, so a public document from either country is recognized in the other once apostilled by the issuing country's competent authority. No embassy step is needed in either direction. Serbia is accredited to Georgia from an embassy in the region and Georgia to Serbia likewise; what the embassies handle is visas where required, the registration of their citizens' marriages and births abroad and consular certificates, which is separate from the apostille and presupposes apostilled originals.

Because Serbian offices require a sudski tumač translation rather than a legalized foreign one, the Georgian notarized translation itself usually does not need to be apostilled for Serbia; the sworn translator's certification replaces that function. Georgian offices require a Georgian notarized translation and do not care about Serbian certification of it.

Where Serbian documents get their apostille for Georgia

Serbia issues apostilles through the osnovni sudovi (basic courts) for documents issued by courts, javni beležnici, matične službe and other bodies in their territory - so izvodi iz matičnih knjiga, uverenja, notarial punomoćja and court decisions are apostilled at the basic court of the place of issue, and in Belgrade at the Prvi osnovni sud - and through the Ministry of Justice for certain categories and where the court route is not available. Diplomas from the University of Belgrade and other institutions are apostilled at the basic court after verification by the institution where required. The uverenje o nekažnjavanju from the police and the uverenje da se ne vodi krivični postupak from the court are apostilled at the basic court. Serbian citizens already in Georgia can obtain apostilles through a relative, a lawyer with a punomoćje, or by post. We confirm the correct court for each document before you request it.

Apostille on Georgian documents for Serbia

Georgian documents going to Serbia are apostilled here, and this part we handle entirely. Civil status certificates and Public Service Hall extracts are apostilled through the Public Service Development Agency; notarial acts and court documents through the Ministry of Justice route; diplomas and school certificates through the education verification route, which is the slowest at up to five business days. You bring the original to Agmashenebeli 117 once, or a relative brings it, and we submit, track and collect the apostille, then translate the bundle into Serbian in the required script, notarize it and forward the text to a partner sudski tumač in Belgrade for re-certification. Clients and employers in Serbia receive the finished set by courier within two to three days of re-certification.

Documents most often apostilled between Georgia and Serbia

  • Jedinstvena dozvola and employment: Georgian conviction certificate, diplomas and vocational certificates where the job requires them, marriage and birth certificates for family members.
  • Marriage in Serbia: Georgian birth certificate, marital status certificate, divorce decisions.
  • Recognition and university admission: Georgian diplomas, supplements, school leaving certificates with national exam results.
  • Property and inheritance in Serbia: punomoćja for javni beležnici, Georgian death certificates and inheritance certificates.
  • For Georgian residence permits: Serbian uverenje o nekažnjavanju, izvodi iz matičnih knjiga, diplomas.
  • For company registration in Georgia: Serbian izvodi iz APR, osnivački akti and punomoćja.
  • Construction and engineering: company and licensing documents for Serbian contractors on Georgian projects.

The sequence for Serbian files

  • Step 1: the Georgian original is apostilled by the competent Georgian authority.
  • Step 2: we translate the document and its apostille into Serbian, in Cyrillic or Latin as the office requires, in the ekavian standard, and the translation is notarized.
  • Step 3: the text is re-certified by a partner sudski tumač in Belgrade, who binds it to the apostilled original or a certified copy.
  • Step 4: the bundle is delivered to you, your employer or the Ministry of Interior.

Translating before apostilling leaves the apostille certificate untranslated and the file is returned; delivering in the wrong script or standard wastes a day. For employer groups we run all candidates' documents through the sequence in parallel. We confirm the sequence and script in the first reply based on the receiving office.

Timing, validity and common errors

Apostilles on Georgian civil status documents usually take one to three business days; notarial acts and court documents about the same; education documents up to five. Add 1-2 hours for the translation and a few days for sudski tumač re-certification in Serbia. Serbian basic court apostilles typically take a few days, longer at the busy Belgrade courts. Serbian matične službe want civil status documents recently issued, and the uverenje o nekažnjavanju and the Georgian conviction certificate are accepted for a limited period, so timing matters, especially for worker files where the employer's single permit application has its own deadline. The errors we correct most often are an untranslated apostille certificate, a document apostilled at the wrong basic court, a marital status certificate obtained too early, a Georgian document in a maiden name that differs from the passport, Serbian diacritics transliterated inconsistently into Georgian, an ijekavian text sent to a Serbian office, and a bundle unstapled for scanning, which both countries' offices treat as invalid. Send photos of both sides of every page and we run this check before submitting.

Serbian translation - frequently asked questions

Where do I apostille my Serbian uverenje o nekažnjavanju?+
At the osnovni sud of the place of issue, or the Prvi osnovni sud in Belgrade. We confirm the correct court for your document.
Does the notarized Serbian translation need its own apostille?+
Usually not, because the sudski tumač re-certification replaces it. Where a Serbian office accepts a legalized foreign translation instead, we apostille it in Georgia.
How long does apostille plus Serbian translation take for a birth certificate?+
Translation in 1-2 hours; apostille on the original in one to three business days; sudski tumač re-certification a few days. A complete bundle typically reaches Serbia within ten days.
Can you run a factory group's documents in parallel to meet the employer's deadline?+
Yes. All candidates' apostilles, translations and re-certifications are processed together so the group's files are ready on the same date.
