Armenian in Georgia: the neighbor's language, the family's language

No other language pair at our office has such deep roots. Georgian citizens of Armenian descent in Tbilisi's Avlabari and Havlabar districts and across Samtskhe-Javakheti hold Georgian documents but have relatives, property, graves and inheritance in Armenia. Citizens of Armenia come to Georgia to study, to work, to marry, to do business, to transit to the Black Sea ports, and since 2020 many have settled here permanently, alongside Armenian IT companies and their staff. Every one of these situations produces documents in Armenian that Georgian authorities need in Georgian, and documents in Georgian that Armenian authorities need in Armenian.

The Armenian alphabet, the older documents in Russian, the Soviet-era certificates with both languages, and the different transliteration conventions for Armenian names in Georgian and Latin make this pair technically demanding. Our Armenian team consists of native Armenian speakers educated in Yerevan and Tbilisi, registered with the notary at David Agmashenebeli Ave 117, so a document is translated and notarized in one visit, and read by someone who knows both countries' registries from the inside.

Translation directions for Armenian

  • Armenian → Georgian: passports and ID cards, driving licenses, birth, marriage and death certificates from the ՔԿԱԳ (civil registry), the police clearance certificate, diplomas and their annexes, court decisions, State Register extracts, charters, powers of attorney, bank statements and medical records entering the Georgian system, always notarized in Georgia. Passports and driving licenses are translated from a photo without a visit.
  • Georgian → Armenian: Georgian civil status certificates, court rulings, Public Registry extracts, diplomas and medical records for Armenian civil registries, courts, universities, the State Revenue Committee, banks and employers, notarized and apostilled.
  • Armenian ↔ Russian and Armenian ↔ English: direct translation for older documents in Russian, for Armenian IT companies with English-language operations and for corporate files involving Armenian, Georgian and international parties.

Soviet-era Armenian documents are bilingual Armenian-Russian or Russian only; we translate from whichever language is present and note the issuing republic where Georgian authorities need it.

What Georgian and Armenian authorities expect from each other's documents

Georgia and Armenia are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so a public document from one country is recognized in the other once it carries an apostille from the issuing country; there is no consular legalization. The two countries also have a bilateral treaty on legal assistance under which certain official documents are accepted without legalization, and Georgian offices apply this to some Armenian civil status and court documents in practice, though not uniformly. Our approach is to check what the specific receiving office has actually accepted recently, so that an Armenian birth certificate for a marriage at the House of Justice or an Armenian court decision for a Georgian inheritance case is not sent for a stamp it does not need, and an Armenian diploma for recognition is not submitted without the apostille the recognition center will demand. Whatever the legalization status, the translation must be notarized by a Georgian notary in Georgia and by an Armenian notary in Armenia; a translation notarized across the border is a foreign notarial act and is not accepted on its own.

How Armenian clients order, in Tbilisi, in Javakheti and in Yerevan

Clients in Tbilisi send a photo on WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram, in Armenian, Russian or Georgian, and receive a quote within 15 minutes. For passports and driving licenses that is the end of the visit-free process: pay by card or transfer, and the courier brings the notarized translation. For other documents the notary must see the original, so you come to Agmashenebeli 117 once, when the translation is already prepared. Clients in Akhalkalaki, Ninotsminda, Akhaltsikhe and Marneuli, and in Batumi and Kutaisi, send originals by courier and receive the finished documents back the same way while our regional offices are being renovated. Clients in Yerevan, Gyumri or Vanadzor who need a Georgian document for use in Armenia arrange for us to collect it from a relative or a Georgian archive; we translate, notarize, apostille and ship by courier, which reaches Yerevan in one to two days.

Armenian translation - frequently asked questions

Does an Armenian birth certificate need an apostille for marriage in Georgia?+
Some House of Justice offices accept it under the bilateral treaty without apostille, others ask for one. We check the current practice at your office before advising, and the apostille is easily obtained in Armenia if needed.
Can I use a translation notarized in Yerevan in Georgia?+
Not on its own. Georgian authorities require the translation to be notarized by a Georgian notary. We review the Armenian translation and, if accurate, our registered translator signs it and the notary certifies it, at a lower price than a new translation.
Do you translate Soviet-era Armenian documents?+
Yes. We translate from Armenian, Russian or bilingual originals with their original terminology and note the issuing republic where relevant.
Can I get service in Armenian?+
Yes. Our Armenian-speaking managers and translators communicate in Armenian, Russian and Georgian on WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram, phone and in the office.
