Apostille and Legalization of Documents Between Georgia and the German-Speaking Countries

Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Georgia are all Hague Apostille members, so no embassy step is needed in either direction. What matters is which authority, which sequence and whether the translation itself needs a stamp. We handle it from David Agmashenebeli Ave 117.

Apostille replaces legalization between Georgia and the German-speaking world

A Georgian public document - Geburtsurkunde, Heiratsurkunde, Ledigkeitsbescheinigung, Führungszeugnis equivalent, diploma, court judgment, notarial act, Public Registry extract - is recognized in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg once it carries an apostille from the competent Georgian authority. The German Embassy in Tbilisi does not legalize Georgian documents and does not need to. The embassy may, however, verify documents through its own Urkundenüberprüfung procedure in certain visa categories, which is separate from the apostille and which we can prepare documents for.

What differs between authorities is whether the translation must also be apostilled. Many German Ausländerbehörden and the embassy are satisfied with an apostille on the original plus a notarized translation; Standesämter and some Landesbehörden want the notarized translation apostilled as well, so the file carries two apostilles. Austrian authorities frequently ask for the double apostille; Swiss cantons usually do not. We prepare whichever bundle the destination requires.

The apostille sequence for German files

  • Step 1: the Georgian original is apostilled: civil status documents and Public Service Hall extracts through the Public Service Development Agency; notarial acts and court documents through the Ministry of Justice route; diplomas and school certificates through the education verification route.
  • Step 2: we translate the document and its apostille into German and the translation is notarized.
  • Step 3 (when required): the notarized translation is itself apostilled.
  • Step 4: the bundle is kept stapled as issued, scanned as one file for online submissions and shipped by DHL.

Translating before apostilling leaves the apostille certificate untranslated and the file is returned; apostilling the translation when the destination does not require it wastes a state fee. We confirm the sequence in the first reply based on the receiving office.

Documents most often apostilled for Germany, Austria and Switzerland

  • Family reunification (Familiennachzug): Georgian marriage certificate, children's birth certificates, proof of relationship documents, all with apostille and translation.
  • Marriage in Germany or Austria: Geburtsurkunde, Ledigkeitsbescheinigung (marital status certificate), and for Germany often the Ehefähigkeitszeugnis procedure with the Oberlandesgericht, which requires apostilled Georgian civil status documents.
  • Skilled worker, Blue Card, nursing and Ausbildung visas: diplomas, supplements, work records, Führungszeugnis equivalent from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
  • Students: school leaving certificate with national exam results, diploma and Notenübersicht for uni-assist and enrollment.
  • Succession and property: Georgian death certificates, Erbscheine equivalents and court decisions for German Nachlassgerichte and notaries.
  • Business: Public Registry extracts, charters and Vollmachten for German or Austrian subsidiaries and bank accounts.

Where German, Austrian and Swiss documents get their apostille for Georgia

Documents from the German-speaking countries must be apostilled at home before they reach Tbilisi. In Germany the competent authority depends on the document: Urkunden from Standesämter and other Land authorities are apostilled by the Regierungspräsidium, Bezirksregierung or Landesverwaltungsamt of the Land; notarial acts and court documents by the Landgericht president; federal documents such as the Führungszeugnis by the Bundesamt für Justiz, which issues it with apostille on request. In Austria, civil status documents are apostilled by the Land government and court documents by the Landesgericht; federal documents by the Bundesministerium für europäische und internationale Angelegenheiten. In Switzerland, the Staatskanzlei of the canton issues apostilles for cantonal documents and the Federal Chancellery for federal ones. Once the apostilled original is in Tbilisi, we translate it into Georgian and notarize it in 1-2 hours.

Embassy document verification (Urkundenüberprüfung)

For some visa categories - particularly family reunification and cases where the embassy has doubts about a civil status document - the German Embassy may order a verification of Georgian documents through a trusted lawyer, independent of the apostille. This lengthens processing and requires the documents to be complete, consistent and traceable to the issuing Georgian registry. We prepare files with this in mind: full copies rather than extracts where available, consistent transliteration of names across all documents, and translations that reproduce every stamp and registry number so the verifying lawyer can match the document to the register entry. Where a Georgian document has been reissued after a name change, marriage or correction, we translate the correction record as well, which avoids the most frequent verification queries.

Timing, validity and common errors

Apostilles on Georgian civil status documents usually take one to three business days; notarial acts and court documents about the same; education documents up to five. Add 1-2 hours for the translation and a day or two if the notarized translation must also be apostilled. German Standesämter want civil status documents less than six months old, and Führungszeugnisse are generally accepted for three to six months, so timing the apostille matters. The errors we correct most often are an untranslated apostille certificate, a Ledigkeitsbescheinigung obtained too early, a Georgian document in a maiden name that differs from the passport, and a bundle unstapled for scanning, which German authorities treat as invalid. Send photos of both sides of every page and we run this check before submitting.

German translation - frequently asked questions

Request it from the Bundesamt für Justiz with apostille when ordering the Führungszeugnis; it arrives already apostilled. Then send it to us for Georgian translation and notarization.
