Beglaubigte Übersetzung, ermächtigter Übersetzer and the Georgian notarized translation

In Germany a beglaubigte Übersetzung is produced by a translator who is öffentlich bestellt und beeidigt (or ermächtigt, depending on the Land) by a Landgericht or Oberlandesgericht; the translator's stamp and Bestätigungsvermerk give the document official value. Austria has gerichtlich beeidete und zertifizierte Dolmetscher registered with the courts; Switzerland relies on cantonal practice and notarial certification. Georgia has no sworn-translator register. The official form here is the translation notarized by a Georgian notary, who certifies the signature of a translator registered with that notary as competent in German.

The two systems connect through legalization. A Georgian notarized translation is a foreign public document that a German authority can accept once it carries an apostille, and this is how the German Embassy in Tbilisi and most Ausländerbehörden process Georgian documents. The alternative - sending Georgian originals to a sworn translator in Germany - is slower and more expensive, and still requires the apostille on the original.

The German Embassy in Tbilisi: visa files for work, study, family and Ausbildung

The embassy handles national visas for skilled workers, the EU Blue Card, Ausbildung and nursing recruitment, students, language courses, family reunification, au pairs and the Chancenkarte, plus the seasonal worker program. Its checklists require Georgian documents with apostille and German translation, and it publishes guidance on acceptable translations; our notarized translations of apostilled originals meet this and are used in embassy files daily. The documents vary by category - a Führungszeugnis equivalent and marriage certificate for family reunification, diploma and Anerkennungsbescheid for skilled workers, school certificate and university admission for students, the employment contract and Vorabzustimmung of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit for many work visas - and we assemble the translated set to match the embassy's list for your category, keeping your name's transliteration identical across every document.

Germany after arrival: Ausländerbehörde, Standesamt, Jobcenter, Anerkennung

The Ausländerbehörde issuing an Aufenthaltstitel usually accepts the same apostilled and translated documents used for the visa. Standesämter registering a marriage or a birth are the strictest German offices: many insist on a translation by a translator sworn in Germany, and some additionally require the translation to be made from the apostilled original rather than a copy. For these we forward our text to a partner sworn translator in Germany who certifies it, avoiding a second translation. Recognition offices - the ZAB for academic degrees with its anabin database, IHK FOSA and the Handwerkskammern for vocational qualifications, the Landesprüfungsämter and Ärztekammern for Approbation, the Regierungspräsidien for nursing - accept certified translations, and we format the packet for each; the education documents page covers this in detail. Jobcenter, Krankenkassen and Familienkasse accept certified translations of civil status documents for benefit and insurance purposes.

Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein

Austria. The MA 35 in Vienna and the Bezirkshauptmannschaften elsewhere require Georgian documents with apostille and German translation for Aufenthaltstitel, Rot-Weiß-Rot Card and family reunification; they generally accept apostilled foreign notarized translations but may ask for a gerichtlich beeideter Übersetzer, which we arrange. Austrian universities and the Nostrifizierung procedure accept certified translations with apostilled originals.

Switzerland. Cantonal migration offices in Zurich, Bern, Basel, St. Gallen and the other German-speaking cantons take certified translations with apostille on the original; some cantonal civil registry offices require notarial certification of the translation, which our notarized version provides. Swiss universities accept certified translations.

Liechtenstein follows Swiss practice for most administrative purposes.

German documents for Georgian authorities

Any German-language document used in Georgia must be translated into Georgian and notarized here. The most frequent are Reisepässe and Führerscheine (translated from a photo, no visit needed), Geburts- und Heiratsurkunden for marriage registration and family residence permits, the Führungszeugnis for residence permits, diplomas for work permits and recognition, Handelsregisterauszüge, Gesellschaftsverträge and Gesellschafterbeschlüsse for company registration, Vollmachten for representatives, Arbeitsverträge and Kontoauszüge for proof of income, and Rentenbescheide and Versicherungsbescheinigungen for various procedures. German public documents must carry an apostille - from the Landgericht, the Regierungspräsidium or the Bundesverwaltungsamt depending on the document - before the translation is notarized; Austrian ones from the Bundesministerium or Landesgericht; Swiss ones from the Staatskanzlei of the canton. We also offer e-Notary certification with a qualified electronic signature for clients who need a verifiable PDF.

Certified translation without notarization, and when it is enough

Not every recipient needs the notary. German universities for admission, employers, landlords, insurers and online portals often accept a certified translation with our agency stamp and Bestätigungsvermerk, which is quicker and cheaper. The embassy, Standesämter, Georgian courts, registries, the Public Service Hall and banks do not. Tell us who will receive the document and we recommend the right level; if you later need a notarized version of a certified translation, we upgrade it without re-translating. For clients who submit everything online - uni-assist, many Ausländerbehörden, the Bundesagentur's portal - we issue digitally signed PDFs, and we print, stamp and courier the same file when paper is required.

German translation - frequently asked questions

Can I use a beglaubigte Übersetzung from Germany for a Georgian residence permit?+
Not on its own. Georgian authorities require notarization by a Georgian notary. We can have the German sworn translation reviewed and signed by our registered translator and notarized locally, which is cheaper than re-translating.
Does the embassy require the translation to be made by a specific translator?+
The embassy publishes guidance on acceptable translations; our notarized translations of apostilled originals comply with it and are used in embassy files every day.
A Standesamt in Germany rejected my Georgian translation. What now?+
Some Standesämter insist on a translator sworn in Germany. Send us the rejection letter; we forward our text to a partner sworn translator there who certifies it, typically within a few days, without a second translation.
How long does a Führungszeugnis translation take?+
Once the apostilled Führungszeugnis is with us, 1-2 hours for the notarized Georgian translation.
