The MEXT scholarship and Japanese university admission
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, applied for through the Japanese Embassy in Tbilisi by embassy recommendation or through a Japanese university by university recommendation, admits Georgian students to research (graduate), undergraduate, teacher training and Japanese studies programs with tuition, a stipend and travel, and its document list is precise: the diploma and transcript or the school leaving certificate with national exam results, translated into Japanese or English and certified; a research plan or field of study; recommendation letters; a medical certificate on MEXT's form; and language certificates (JLPT or English). Japanese universities admitting Georgian students directly, and the 在留資格認定証明書 for the Student visa, follow similar lists and accept translations with the translator's certification. We translate the Georgian packet into Japanese or English as the program requires, with our certification and seal, and keep the student's transliteration on file for the whole degree.
Japanese transcripts and the grading system for Georgian universities
Japanese students and graduates coming to Georgian universities - for Georgian language and Caucasus studies, for English-language programs, and increasingly for master's degrees - and Japanese citizens seeking recognition of their degrees in Georgia present the 卒業証明書 (certificate of graduation), 成績証明書 (transcript) and 学位記 or 学位授与証明書 (degree certificate), issued by the university's registrar, apostilled by MOFA if from a public university or through the notary route if from a private one, and translated and notarized here. Japanese transcripts list courses by year with credits and grades on a 秀・優・良・可 or S/A/B/C scale, or a GPA, and we translate them course by course with the grading scale explained in a translator's note where the receiving institution asks; the 在学証明書 (enrollment certificate) is translated for student residence permits and credit transfer.
Japanese degrees for recognition and employment in Georgia
A Japanese degree used in Georgia - for a work permit with JICA or a Japanese company, for a teaching, engineering or medical position, for admission to a Georgian master's or doctoral program, or for recognition at the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement - must be apostilled (directly by MOFA for national and public universities, via a 公証役場 and the Legal Affairs Bureau for private ones) and translated into Georgian and notarized in Tbilisi. We translate the 学位記, the 成績証明書 and, when recognition is sought, course descriptions from the university's syllabus. Japanese degrees carry titles - 学士, 修士, 博士, 専門職学位 - and university names that a Georgian committee needs in standard form, which we provide with the university's own English rendering; medical graduates should expect the recognition body to ask for the 医師免許証 and specialist certification. Georgian graduates of Japanese universities returning home, many of them MEXT alumni, are the largest group here.
Japanese language: JLPT, Japanese studies and language school visas
Georgian interest in Japanese has produced a stream of language documents. JLPT results are required for MEXT, for Japanese universities and for the Specified Skilled Worker and other visas, and are translated into Georgian for Georgian employers and scholarship bodies; Japanese language course records from Tbilisi State University's Japanese program and from Japan Foundation courses are translated into Japanese for Student visa applications to Japanese language schools and for Japanese institutions. Georgians going to Japan for language study need the school leaving certificate or diploma, bank statements and the sponsor's documents translated for the 在留資格認定証明書, and we prepare these sets to the language school's and immigration's checklist.
School certificates, international schools and children's transfers
Japanese families in Tbilisi, mostly with JICA and Japanese companies, enroll children in international schools or Georgian public schools with the 在学証明書, 成績証明書 and 指導要録 extracts translated; schools generally accept certified translations for placement. Georgian families moving to Japan need Georgian school records translated into Japanese for the 教育委員会 (board of education) and the school, which places the child in the right grade; Japanese schools also ask for vaccination records and a health certificate. Students need 在学証明書 and student status letters in the other language for visas, permits and banks.
Research plans, recommendations, CVs and timing
MEXT and Japanese university applications ask for a research plan (研究計画書) and a statement of purpose, which Georgian applicants ask us to translate or edit in Japanese or English so they read naturally to a Japanese committee, and for recommendation letters from Georgian professors translated while preserving the signature block; Japanese applications favor a specific structure and register that our native Japanese editors know. Doctoral candidates need thesis abstracts and publication lists translated, and researchers collaborating with Japanese universities use our editors for articles and conference materials. The Japanese 履歴書 (CV) follows a fixed format that we prepare for Georgian applicants to Japanese employers.
On timing: the MEXT embassy recommendation opens in spring for the following year, university recommendation runs on each university's calendar, Japanese universities have April and September intakes with deadlines months ahead, the 在留資格認定証明書 takes one to three months, and the apostille on a Georgian diploma can take up to five business days. Start the apostille early, since the apostilled diploma is reusable, and ask for a digital certified translation first so you can upload it while the paper originals are in process.
