Russian in Georgia: the language pair with the most paperwork behind it

No language generates more notarized translations in Tbilisi than Russian. Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine arrive with passports, diplomas, marriage certificates and police clearances written in Russian, and every one of those documents must be translated into Georgian and notarized before the Public Service Development Agency, the House of Justice, a Georgian bank or the Revenue Service will look at it. In the other direction, Georgians with family, property, pensions or inheritance in Russia and the former Soviet republics need Georgian certificates and court decisions translated into Russian and apostilled.

The particular difficulty of this pair is not vocabulary but bureaucracy. Russian-language documents come from a dozen different states with different formats, different apostille authorities and different rules about what a "notarized translation" means. A Kazakh birth certificate, a Belarusian diploma and a Russian ЕГРЮЛ extract each need a slightly different treatment before a Georgian notary can certify them, and we have handled all three often enough to know the differences by heart. Our Russian translators are native speakers educated in Russia or Georgia, registered with the notary at David Agmashenebeli Ave 117, so translation and notarization happen in the same visit.

Directions: Russian to Georgian, Georgian to Russian, Russian to English

  • Russian → Georgian is the volume direction: passports and driving licenses (from a photo, no visit needed), diplomas and приложение к диплому, справка о несудимости, свидетельство о рождении and о браке, банковские выписки, доверенности, уставы and ЕГРЮЛ extracts. Everything is notarized in Tbilisi for Georgian authorities.
  • Georgian → Russian covers Georgian civil status certificates, court rulings, Public Registry extracts and diplomas for use in Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia and Tajikistan, where Russian is an official or working language. These are notarized and usually apostilled.
  • Russian ↔ English is in constant demand from relocated IT companies, freelancers and investors who run their business in English but hold Russian-language personal documents, and from Georgian banks whose compliance departments request English versions of Russian-language contracts and source-of-funds documents.

Three-language sets - the same document in Georgian, Russian and English - are a routine order for company registration and bank onboarding, and we price them as a bundle.

What Georgian authorities expect from Russian-language documents

Georgian state bodies apply one rule: the translation must be certified by a Georgian notary attesting the signature of a translator registered with that notary. A translation notarized in Moscow, Almaty or Minsk is a foreign notarial act and is not accepted on its own. In addition, Russian-language public documents - certificates from ЗАГС, court decisions, police certificates, diplomas, notarial powers of attorney - must carry an apostille from the issuing country before the translation is notarized, since Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Tajikistan and Ukraine are all parties to the Hague Convention. Some documents are exempt from apostille under bilateral legal assistance treaties; we check this for each case rather than sending you for a stamp you do not need.

Passports and driving licenses are the exception to everything: no apostille, no original required, translated and notarized from a photo and delivered by courier. This is the document Russian-speaking newcomers need first and most often, and we treat it as an express product.

Pricing and turnaround for Russian-Georgian translation

Russian is our second-largest pair and is priced at the standard tariff per 1,800-character page, with fixed prices for passports, driving licenses, standard certificates and справки. Bundles of three or more personal documents - the typical residence permit set - are discounted. Notary fees and apostille state fees are itemized separately.

  • Passport, driving license, single certificate or справка: 1-2 hours, notarized.
  • Residence permit set (passport, police clearance, bank statement, lease): same day.
  • Diploma with приложение: same day or next morning.
  • Contracts, charters, court files: 1-3 business days depending on length.
  • Apostille on a Georgian document for Russia or the CIS: add 1-5 business days.

How Russian-speaking clients order, in Tbilisi and beyond

Most Russian-speaking clients contact us on Telegram or WhatsApp, in Russian, with a photo of the document. The quote comes back within 15 minutes, in Russian. For passports and licenses that is the end of the visit-free process: pay by card or transfer, and the courier brings the notarized translation. For all other documents the notary must see the original, so you come to Agmashenebeli 117 once, when the translation is already prepared, and leave with the notarized document. Clients in Batumi, where the Russian-speaking community is largest after Tbilisi, in Kutaisi and in other regions send the original by courier while our regional offices are being renovated, and receive the finished documents back the same way. Clients in Russia, Kazakhstan or Belarus who need a Georgian document for use there arrange for us to collect it from a relative or a Georgian archive; we translate, notarize, apostille and ship by courier.
