Apostille and Legalization Between Georgia and Slovenia - Authorities, Sequence and Timing
Both countries are Hague members, so a single apostille does the job in either direction - but Slovenia issues apostilles through district courts and ministries depending on the document, Slovenian offices require sworn translations, and the sequence matters. We handle it from David Agmashenebeli Ave 117.

Apostille replaces legalization between Georgia and Slovenia
Slovenia has been a Hague Apostille member since its independence, succeeding to the convention in 1992, and Georgia joined in 2007, so a public document from either country is recognized in the other once apostilled by the issuing country's competent authority. No embassy step is needed in either direction. What the Slovenian embassy accredited to Georgia handles is the issuance of visas and single permits and the registration of Slovenian citizens' marriages and births abroad, which is separate from the apostille and presupposes apostilled originals.
Because Slovenian offices require a sodni tolmač translation rather than a legalized foreign one, the Georgian notarized translation itself usually does not need to be apostilled for Slovenia; the sworn translator's certification replaces that function. Georgian offices require a Georgian notarized translation and do not care about Slovenian certification of it.
Where Slovenian documents get their apostille for Georgia
Slovenia distributes apostille authority by document type. District courts (okrožna sodišča) apostille documents issued by courts, notaries and court interpreters, and documents issued by the upravne enote and matične službe in their district - so rojstni and poročni listi, potrdila o samskem stanu and notarial pooblastila go to the district court. The Ministry of Justice apostilles the potrdilo o nekaznovanosti and documents issued by the ministry itself. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs apostilles documents issued by other state bodies, including diplomas and other education documents, izpiski iz sodnega registra from AJPES, and documents from the ZZZS and ZPIZ. Slovenian citizens already in Georgia can obtain apostilles through a relative, a lawyer with a pooblastilo, or by post. We confirm the correct authority for each document before you request it.
Apostille on Georgian documents for Slovenia
Georgian documents going to Slovenia are apostilled here, and this part we handle entirely. Civil status certificates and Public Service Hall extracts are apostilled through the Public Service Development Agency; notarial acts and court documents through the Ministry of Justice route; diplomas and school certificates through the education verification route, which is the slowest at up to five business days. You bring the original to Agmashenebeli 117 once, or a relative brings it, and we submit, track and collect the apostille, then translate the bundle into Slovenian, notarize it and forward the text to a partner sodni tolmač in Slovenia for re-certification. Clients in Slovenia receive the finished set by courier within two to three days of re-certification.

- Family reunification and marriage in Slovenia: Georgian rojstni list, marital status certificate, divorce decisions.
- Recognition and university admission: Georgian diplomas, supplements, school leaving certificates with national exam results.
- For Georgian residence permits: Slovenian potrdilo o nekaznovanosti, rojstni and poročni listi, diplomas.
- For company registration in Georgia: Slovenian izpiski iz sodnega registra, družbene pogodbe and pooblastila.
- Succession and property: Georgian death certificates and inheritance certificates for Slovenian notaries, Slovenian sklepi o dedovanju for Georgian notaries.
The sequence for Slovenian files
- Step 1: the Georgian original is apostilled by the competent Georgian authority.
- Step 2: we translate the document and its apostille into Slovenian and the translation is notarized.
- Step 3: the text is re-certified by a partner sodni tolmač in Slovenia, who binds it to the apostilled original or a certified copy.
- Step 4: the bundle is delivered to you, your employer or the Upravna enota.
Translating before apostilling leaves the apostille certificate untranslated and the file is returned. We confirm the sequence in the first reply based on the receiving office.
Timing, validity and common errors
Apostilles on Georgian civil status documents usually take one to three business days; notarial acts and court documents about the same; education documents up to five. Add 1-2 hours for the translation and a few days for sodni tolmač re-certification in Slovenia. Slovenian apostilles from district courts and ministries typically take a few days. Slovenian matične službe want civil status documents recently issued, and the potrdilo o nekaznovanosti and the Georgian conviction certificate are accepted for a limited period, so timing matters. The errors we correct most often are an untranslated apostille certificate, a document sent to the wrong Slovenian apostille authority, a marital status certificate obtained too early, a Georgian document in a maiden name that differs from the passport, Slovenian diacritics transliterated inconsistently into Georgian, and a bundle unstapled for scanning, which both countries' offices treat as invalid. Send photos of both sides of every page and we run this check before submitting.
