Apostille and Legalization of Documents Between Georgia and the Spanish-Speaking World
Spain and nearly all of Latin America are Hague Apostille members, so a single stamp does the job in either direction - except for Cuba and Bolivia, which still need the consular chain. We handle both from David Agmashenebeli Ave 117.

Apostille covers Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru and most of the region
Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, as is Georgia. A Georgian public document - certificado de nacimiento, matrimonio, defunción, estado civil, the conviction certificate, diploma, sentencia, escritura notarial, Public Registry extract - is recognized in any of them once it carries an apostille from the competent Georgian authority. No embassy step is needed, and the Spanish Embassy in Tbilisi does not legalize Georgian documents for that reason, though it does certify translations for some of its own procedures.
Whether the translation must also be apostilled depends on the office. Spanish Extranjería and Registros Civiles generally want the translation legalized as well, producing a double-apostille bundle; Mexican and Colombian offices are usually satisfied with an apostille on the original plus a notarized translation; Argentina wants the Colegio legalization on the translation instead. We prepare whichever bundle the destination requires.
The apostille sequence for Spanish-language files
- Step 1: the Georgian original is apostilled: civil status documents and Public Service Hall extracts through the Public Service Development Agency; notarial acts and court documents through the Ministry of Justice route; diplomas and school certificates through the education verification route.
- Step 2: we translate the document and its apostille into Spanish, in the regional variant of the destination, and the translation is notarized.
- Step 3 (Spain, some Latin American offices): the notarized translation is itself apostilled.
- Step 3 (Argentina): the translation is certified by a partner traductor público and legalized by the Colegio on arrival.
- Step 4: the bundle is kept stapled as issued, scanned as one file for online submissions and shipped by DHL.
Translating before apostilling leaves the apostille certificate untranslated and the file is returned. We confirm the sequence in the first reply based on the receiving office.
Documents most often apostilled for Spain and Latin America
- Arraigo, family reunification and residencia in Spain: Georgian birth and marriage certificates, the conviction certificate, proof of relationship documents.
- Marriage in Spain or Mexico: certificado de nacimiento, certificado de estado civil (soltería), and for Spain the certificado de capacidad matrimonial procedure at the Registro Civil.
- Nacionalidad española: the full chain of Georgian civil status records, the conviction certificate, and for descendants of Spanish citizens historical records.
- Study and homologación: diploma and expediente académico, school leaving certificate with national exam results.
- Digital nomad and retiree visas across the region: Georgian conviction certificate, proof of income, medical certificates.
- Succession and property: Georgian death certificates, inheritance certificates and court decisions for Spanish and Mexican notarías.
- Business: Public Registry extracts, estatutos and poderes for subsidiaries and bank accounts in Spain, Mexico and Colombia.
Consular legalization for Cuba, Bolivia and other non-Hague cases
Cuba and Bolivia are not apostille members. A Georgian document for these countries goes through consular legalization: first certification at the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then legalization at the Cuban or Bolivian embassy accredited to Georgia, which is located outside Tbilisi and which we reach through partners so you never need to travel. The Spanish translation is prepared before legalization and notarized so the legalized bundle is complete on arrival. Cuban documents for use in Georgia are legalized by the Cuban MINREX and then by the Georgian mission accredited to Cuba, and Bolivian documents by the Bolivian Cancillería and the Georgian mission accredited there; we advise on the current routes, which change as diplomatic accreditations change.
Where Spanish and Latin American documents get their apostille for Georgia
Documents must be apostilled at home before they reach Tbilisi, and the competent authority depends on the country and the document. In Spain, notarial documents are apostilled by the Colegio Notarial, judicial documents by the Secretaría de Gobierno of the Tribunal Superior de Justicia, and administrative and civil status documents by the Ministerio de Justicia and its Gerencias Territoriales, increasingly through the electronic apostille service. In Mexico, federal documents are apostilled by the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores and state documents by each state's Secretaría de Gobierno. In Argentina, by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores or, for notarial documents, the Colegio de Escribanos. In Colombia, by the Cancillería through its online apostille service. In Chile and Peru, by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores. Once the apostilled original is in Tbilisi, we translate it into Georgian and notarize it in 1-2 hours; electronic apostilles with QR verification are translated including the verification block.
Timing, validity and common errors
Apostilles on Georgian civil status documents usually take one to three business days; notarial acts and court documents about the same; education documents up to five. Add 1-2 hours for the translation and a day or two if the notarized translation must also be apostilled. Spanish Registros Civiles want civil status documents less than three to six months old, and the Georgian conviction certificate is accepted for three to six months, so timing matters. Transatlantic courier adds three to five days. The errors we correct most often are an untranslated apostille certificate, a certificado de soltería obtained too early, a Georgian document in a maiden name that differs from the passport, a translation in the wrong regional variant for the destination, and a bundle unstapled for scanning, which Spanish-speaking offices treat as invalid. Send photos of both sides of every page and we run this check before submitting.
