Why English translation is the backbone of every expat file in Georgia

English is the working language of almost every foreigner who lives, invests or studies in Georgia, and it is also the language in which Georgian documents most often need to travel abroad. That creates two very different jobs. Georgian authorities - the Public Service Development Agency, the House of Justice, the National Agency of Public Registry, the Revenue Service, Georgian courts and banks - require foreign documents to be translated into Georgian and notarized. Foreign authorities, on the other hand, require Georgian documents translated into English in the exact certification format their own rules prescribe, and those rules differ sharply between the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland and the European Union.

Translation Bureau has handled English-Georgian work daily for years from our office at David Agmashenebeli Ave 117, two minutes from Marjanishvili Metro. Our English team is made up of Georgian sworn translators for the legal side and native English-speaking editors for the readability side, so a translated contract reads like a contract and a translated diploma supplement uses the vocabulary a registrar in Manchester or Toronto expects to see. The result is a translation that is accepted the first time, which is what actually saves you money.

Translation directions we cover for English

Every English project falls into one of three directions, and each has its own workflow.

  • Georgian → English. Birth and marriage certificates, police clearance certificates, diplomas, court decisions, company extracts and contracts leaving Georgia for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand or an EU institution. Translated by a Georgian sworn translator, edited by a native English speaker, certified or notarized to match the destination, then apostilled if the receiving country requires it.
  • English → Georgian. Passports, driving licenses, foreign diplomas, powers of attorney, employment contracts, bank statements and corporate documents entering the Georgian system. These must be notarized in Georgia; an English-language "certified translation" from abroad is generally not accepted by Georgian registries.
  • English ↔ other languages. Direct translation between English and Russian, German, French, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese and the rest of our 49 languages, without a Georgian intermediate step. Common for corporate groups running Georgian subsidiaries from London, Dubai or Istanbul.

Because the same document can go in either direction, we keep bilingual templates for the most frequent Georgian civil status certificates and House of Justice extracts. That is why a standard certificate is finished in an hour rather than a day.

Which certification English-speaking authorities actually accept

This is where most people lose time, so here is the practical map we work from:

DestinationWhat they requireWhat we deliver
USA (USCIS, universities, courts)Certified translation with translator's signed statement of competence and accuracy; notarization not requiredAgency-certified translation with full translator certification page
United Kingdom (Home Office, HMPO, UK ENIC)Certified translation with translator's credentials, date, contact details and confirmation it is a true copyCertified translation on letterhead, plus notarization on request
Canada (IRCC, WES, provincial regulators)Certified translation plus affidavit if the translator is not a Canadian certified translatorNotarized translation with translator's affidavit
Australia and New Zealand (DHA, INZ, universities)Translation by a qualified translator with credentials on the documentCertified translation with translator qualifications and stamp
Ireland and EU institutionsCertified or sworn translation, usually with apostille on the originalNotarized translation plus apostille

If you tell us the exact office the document is going to, we format the certification for that office. Read more on the notarized and certified English translation page.

Pricing and turnaround for English-Georgian translation

English is our highest-volume pair, which keeps the price per page at the lower end of our tariff. A standard page is 1,800 characters including spaces, and civil status certificates, licenses and passports are billed as fixed-price documents rather than per page. Notary fees, apostille state fees and courier charges are itemized separately so the quote is fully transparent.

Turnaround depends on volume and certification:

  • Passport, driving license, single certificate: 1-2 hours, express track, notarized.
  • Diploma with supplement or transcript (3-8 pages): same day.
  • Contracts, court files, financial statements (10-50 pages): 1-3 business days, with terminology review.
  • Apostille on top of any of the above: add 1-5 business days depending on the issuing body.

Send a photo and you will have a fixed, all-inclusive quote within 15 minutes.

Ordering English translation from Tbilisi or from abroad

Clients in Tbilisi send a photo on WhatsApp for the quote, then bring the original to Agmashenebeli 117, where the translation is already waiting to be notarized. Passports and driving licenses are the exception: those we translate and notarize from the photo alone and courier the original to you, an exclusive service in Tbilisi.

Clients in London, New York, Sydney or Dublin who need a Georgian document translated into English usually have the original in Georgia already - with a relative, a lawyer or in a Georgian archive. We collect it, translate, notarize, apostille and ship by DHL or FedEx with tracking. Clients who already hold the original abroad can courier it to us; the whole cycle rarely exceeds a week door to door. Batumi, Kutaisi and every other Georgian city are served the same way while our regional offices are under renovation.

English translation - frequently asked questions

Do I need a notarized or a certified translation for USCIS?+
USCIS asks for a certified translation: the full English text plus a signed statement from the translator confirming competence in both languages and accuracy of the translation. Notarization is not required by USCIS, though some immigration attorneys prefer it. We supply the certification page in the standard USCIS wording.
Can you translate a UK document into Georgian for my residence permit?+
Yes. UK documents such as ACRO police certificates, birth certificates from the GRO, degree certificates and bank letters are translated into Georgian and notarized in Tbilisi. If the document will be used for a residence permit, the UK original normally needs an apostille from the FCDO first; we can advise on the sequence.
Is Georgian-to-English translation accepted by UK ENIC and WES?+
Both accept our certified translations of Georgian diplomas, supplements and transcripts. WES requires the translation to be sent by the institution or by a recognized translator alongside the original; we prepare the packet in the format each service asks for.
How fast can you translate a Georgian birth certificate into English?+
Within 1-2 hours on the express track, including notarization. If you also need an apostille for use abroad, allow 1-5 additional business days.
