Why every English-speaking destination needs an apostille on Georgian documents
The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada (since January 2024), Australia, Ireland and New Zealand are all parties to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, and so is Georgia. That means a Georgian public document - birth, marriage or death certificate, police clearance, diploma, court judgment, notarial act, company extract - is recognized in those countries once it carries an apostille issued by the competent Georgian authority. No embassy or consulate step is needed.
What the apostille does not do is translate. An apostilled Georgian birth certificate is legally valid in Texas, but the clerk still cannot read it. That is why almost every English-speaking file combines two things: the apostille on the Georgian original and a certified English translation formatted for the specific authority.
The correct sequence: apostille first, translate second, or both together
The order matters and it depends on the destination:
- USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand: apostille the Georgian original, then translate everything including the apostille certificate itself into English with our certified statement. The translation does not need its own apostille.
- United Kingdom: same sequence; the Home Office wants the apostilled original plus a certified translation of the whole document.
- Ireland and many EU bodies: often the notarized translation is apostilled as well, so the file carries two apostilles - one on the original, one on the notarized translation. We prepare the double-apostille bundle routinely.
Doing this in the wrong order means paying for the apostille twice. Tell us the destination and we lock the sequence before anything is submitted.
Who issues apostilles in Georgia and how long it takes
Georgia has several competent authorities. Civil status documents and Public Registry extracts are apostilled through the Public Service Development Agency and the Public Service Hall; education documents through the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement route; notarial acts and court documents through the Ministry of Justice channels. Each has its own processing time and state fee, and the fastest tracks can be same-day for some document types, while education documents are generally the slowest at up to five business days.
You bring the original to our office once; we lodge it with the right authority, track it and collect it. Clients abroad send us the original by courier or authorize a relative to hand it in, and we ship the apostilled and translated bundle worldwide by DHL with tracking.
Documents most often apostilled for English-speaking countries
From our daily work, the typical files are:
- Immigration to the US and UK: birth certificates, marriage certificates, Georgian police clearance certificates, divorce decrees for remarriage.
- Canadian Express Entry and provincial nominee programs: diplomas and transcripts for ECA, police certificates, proof of relationship documents.
- Australian skilled and partner visas: Georgian degree certificates, marriage certificates, name change documents.
- Irish work permits and EU family reunification: civil status certificates with double apostille.
- Business: Public Registry extracts, charters and powers of attorney for opening subsidiaries or bank accounts in the US and UK.
Legalizing English-speaking countries' documents for use in Georgia
The process also runs in reverse. An American FBI background check, a British ACRO certificate, a Canadian RCMP certificate or an Australian degree used for a Georgian residence permit, work permit or company registration must be apostilled in its country of origin first: by the US Secretary of State or State Department, the UK FCDO, Global Affairs Canada or the Australian DFAT. Once the apostilled original reaches Tbilisi, we translate it into Georgian and notarize it. We cannot apostille a foreign document in Georgia, but we can tell you exactly which office to use abroad and, for US documents, which state authority applies to your certificate.
Common apostille mistakes with English-speaking destinations
Three errors account for most of the rejected files we are asked to rescue. The first is apostilling a photocopy or a notarized copy when the destination demanded the original; US state agencies and the UK Home Office generally want the apostille on the original certificate itself. The second is an expired underlying document: Georgian police clearance certificates and marital status certificates are only accepted for a limited period, and an apostille does not extend that validity, so a certificate obtained months before departure may need to be reissued. The third is a mismatch between the name on the apostilled Georgian document and the name in the traveller's passport, typically because of a marriage, a Georgian-to-Latin transliteration change or a patronymic that the foreign form has no field for. We check all three before submitting, and we add a translator's note on transliteration where the two spellings differ so the receiving officer understands they refer to the same person.
A final practical point: apostilles issued in Georgia are printed as a separate sheet stapled to the document. Never remove the staple to scan the pages separately, because a detached apostille is treated as invalid. If you need a digital copy, scan the bundle as one file.
