Ph.D. and Doctoral Degree Translation - Doctorates, Candidate and Doctor of Sciences Degrees and Academic Titles

Doctoral degrees carry titles that mean different things in different systems, and a translation that calls everything a Ph.D. misleads the reader as surely as one that translates nothing. We translate doctoral diplomas, the Soviet-era candidate and doctor of sciences degrees, habilitations, dissertation abstracts and academic titles into and from 49 languages, with the notes that universities, recognition bodies and immigration officers need to understand what was awarded.

Doctoral degrees in Georgia: the Ph.D. and its predecessors

Georgia introduced the three-cycle Bologna structure in 2005, and Georgian universities have since awarded the doctoral degree (Ph.D., "doktori" in the field) after a structured doctoral program and the defense of a dissertation; the diploma is issued by the university and accompanied by a diploma supplement or transcript of the doctoral program. Before that, Georgia used the Soviet system inherited from the USSR: the candidate of sciences degree ("mecnierebata kandidati"), awarded after a dissertation defense before a dissertation council and confirmed by a state attestation body, and the doctor of sciences degree ("mecnierebata doktori"), a higher doctorate awarded for a second, major dissertation, with the academic titles of docent and professor conferred separately. Georgian law equates the candidate of sciences degree to the doctoral degree for most purposes, and many Georgian academics hold both a candidate diploma from the 1980s or 1990s and later documents referring to them as doctors; foreign readers need this explained, and we explain it in every translation with a translator's note on the degree's history, its level and its statutory equivalence.

Georgian doctoral documents abroad: universities, research positions and recognition

Georgian doctorate holders present their documents abroad for postdoctoral and academic positions, for research grants and fellowships, for recognition of the degree by a national body (Germany's ZAB and the rules on using the title "Dr.", Italy's CIMEA and the equipollenza of the dottorato di ricerca, the ENIC-NARIC centers, WES), for professional licensing in medicine and engineering where a doctorate affects grading, and for skilled-migration visas that award points for a doctorate. The document set is the doctoral diploma (or the candidate diploma with, where it exists, a certificate of equivalence), the transcript or supplement of the doctoral program, the dissertation abstract (the "avtoreferat" of the Soviet system, or the abstract and summary of the Bologna dissertation), the record of the defense, publication lists, and the documents conferring academic titles. We translate these into the target language with the degree title rendered as written, the original in brackets and a translator's note describing the qualification, notarize the translation, apostille the diploma through the education verification route, and arrange sworn or authorized re-certification abroad where the country requires it. Where a country's rules on the doctoral title are specific - Germany's rules on which foreign doctorates may be used as "Dr." and in what form - our German team advises.

Foreign doctoral degrees in Georgia

Foreign doctorate holders come to Georgia as academics at Georgian universities, as researchers in joint projects, as physicians and engineers whose doctorate affects their licensing and grading, and as specialists whose work permit or residence permit file benefits from the degree; foreign doctoral diplomas are also presented to the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement for formal recognition, which examines the awarding institution, the program and the dissertation requirements. We translate doctoral diplomas from every system into Georgian - the Anglo-American Ph.D., Ed.D., D.Sc. and professional doctorates, the German Dr. rer. nat., Dr. med., Dr.-Ing. and Dr. phil. with their grades, the French doctorat, the Italian dottorato di ricerca, the Polish doktor and doktor habilitowany, the Russian, Ukrainian, Kazakh and Uzbek candidate and doctor of sciences degrees and the newer Ph.D. programs of those countries, the Iranian and Turkish doctorates, the Chinese doctoral degree with its separate graduation certificate - with the qualification explained in a translator's note and the awarding body's status noted, and we translate the dissertation abstracts and defense records that the Center asks for in some cases.

Habilitations, academic titles and honorary degrees

Several documents travel with doctorates and confuse readers who lack them. The habilitation (the German Habilitation, the Polish habilitacja, the French habilitation à diriger des recherches) and the Soviet doctor of sciences degree are higher doctorates or post-doctoral qualifications that authorize independent research and supervision, and have no equivalent in the Anglo-American system; academic titles - docent, professor, academician, member of an academy of sciences - are conferred separately from degrees in the post-Soviet and continental systems and are confused with job titles in others; honorary doctorates are not academic qualifications and must be identified as such; and the diploma of a dissertation council, the certificate of a state attestation commission, and the "attestat" of docent or professor are distinct documents each of which a foreign reader may ask about. We translate each with a note explaining its nature and standing in the system of origin, and we advise academics on which documents a foreign university or body will actually want to see.

Dissertation abstracts, publication lists and research documentation

A doctoral file often extends beyond the diploma. Universities and funding bodies ask for the dissertation abstract and sometimes the full dissertation; research positions ask for publication lists with titles translated and journals identified; ethics committees and grant agencies ask for research proposals; and immigration authorities in skilled-migration systems ask for evidence of research output. We translate dissertation abstracts and summaries with subject specialists - physicians for medical dissertations, engineers for technical ones, and editors with academic backgrounds for the humanities and social sciences - render publication titles accurately with the original in brackets, translate research proposals and CVs in the register the destination expects, and provide certified translations for documents that need no notarization and notarized ones for those that do.

Pricing, timing and how to order

Doctoral diplomas and title documents are priced at a fixed rate per document, with a modest supplement for rare languages, plus the notary's fee; transcripts, abstracts and research documents per page at the standard tariff, with subject-specialist rates for dissertations; the apostille at the state fee plus handling, and sworn or authorized re-certification abroad at the partner's rate. A doctoral diploma is translated in one business day, a doctoral file with abstract and transcript in one to three, and a full dissertation on an agreed schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How do you translate a candidate of sciences degree?+
As "Candidate of Sciences" with the original in brackets and a translator's note explaining that it is the Soviet-system research doctorate, equated to the Ph.D. by Georgian law and treated as a doctorate by most recognition bodies. We do not simply write "Ph.D.", which readers would question.
Can I use "Dr." abroad with a Georgian doctorate?+
That depends on the country's rules; Germany, for example, regulates which foreign doctorates may be used as "Dr." and in what form. Our language teams advise, and the translation gives the reader the information the rules turn on.
Do you translate the dissertation itself?+
Yes, with subject specialists, on an agreed schedule; the abstract and summary are usually what a university or body wants first, and we translate those in one to three days.
Does a doctoral diploma need an apostille abroad?+
For recognition bodies, licensing bodies and most universities, yes, through the education verification route, up to five business days. Employers and funding bodies often accept a certified translation.
