Macedonian and Georgian: wine, football, EU integration and the diaspora
North Macedonia and Georgia have a modest but real relationship built on similar things. Both are wine countries - Tikveš and Kakheti, Vranec and Saperavi - whose producers meet at fairs and study each other's export strategies; both export football coaches and players, and Macedonian and Georgian clubs have hired from each other; both are EU candidates whose ministries, NGOs and think tanks compare notes in the same donor-funded programs on justice reform, public administration and anti-corruption; both are Orthodox countries with church connections; and both have large diasporas in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria, where Macedonians and Georgians meet, marry and go into business together, sending documents home through those countries. Macedonian tourists come to Georgia for wine and mountains that remind them of home at a larger scale, Georgian tourists find Ohrid, and students meet on Erasmus+ exchanges and in each other's universities. Trade in wine, food, construction materials, textiles and pharmaceuticals is small but growing.
North Macedonia's document system is that of the former Yugoslavia, updated. Documents are in Macedonian Cyrillic and, in municipalities where Albanian speakers are at least a fifth of the population and at the central level since the 2019 language law, bilingual Macedonian-Albanian; translations for official use are made by court translators (судски преведувачи) appointed by the Ministry of Justice; and apostilles are issued by the basic courts and the Ministry of Justice. Georgia has the notarized translation. Our Macedonian team at David Agmashenebeli Ave 117 - Georgian sworn translators trained in Skopje, native Macedonian editors and a partner court translator in Skopje for English-bridge re-certification - connects the systems, and our Albanian team handles the Albanian side of bilingual documents.
