Tradução certificada in Portugal, tradução juramentada in Brazil, and the Georgian notarized translation
Portugal has no register of sworn translators. Under the Código do Notariado, a translation acquires official status when the translator declares its fidelity before a notary, a lawyer, a solicitador, a Câmara de Comércio e Indústria or a Portuguese consulate, who certifies the declaration; this tradução certificada is what AIMA, the Conservatórias, courts and universities require, and Portuguese law also recognizes translations certified abroad when the certification is apostilled - which is exactly what a Georgian notarized translation with apostille is. Brazil is different: the tradutor público e intérprete comercial, registered with the Junta Comercial of a state after a public exam, is the only person whose translation has legal effect before Brazilian authorities, and every foreign document must go through one. No tradutor juramentado has ever been registered for Georgian, so Brazilian files use our translation into Portuguese re-certified by a partner tradutor juramentado for English, or an English relay. Georgia has the translation notarized by a Georgian notary, who certifies the signature of a translator registered as competent in Portuguese.
We translate the Georgian original here, notarize it, apostille the original and, where needed, the translation, and where a Portuguese office asks for local certification or a Brazilian office for a tradução juramentada, forward the text to our partners in Lisbon or Brazil. A Portuguese or Brazilian certified translation is, from Georgia's point of view, a foreign document; for use in Georgia the translation must be notarized here.
AIMA: residence permits, family reunification and the Georgian community
AIMA, which took over from SEF in late 2023 and has been working through a large backlog of pending files, decides residence permits for Georgians as workers under the visto de procura de trabalho and the work visa, under the D7 passive income and D2 entrepreneur routes, as students, and for reagrupamento familiar with spouses, children and parents; renewals and the regularization of files lodged before the manifestação de interesse route closed in 2024 form a large part of the community's paperwork. AIMA requires the Georgian passport, the certificado de registo criminal from Georgia (apostilled, translated, and no older than three months), proof of means and accommodation, the employment contract or promise of employment, and for family reunification the apostilled marriage and birth certificates, all with certified translations. We assemble the translated set to match AIMA's checklist for your category, with the transliteration of your name identical across every document and the registo criminal treated as express work because it expires quickly.
Conservatórias, cartão de cidadão, marriage and nationality
The Conservatórias do Registo Civil are where Georgian civil status documents are examined most closely: for the transcrição of a Georgian marriage into the Portuguese register, for marriage in Portugal (the processo de casamento requires the Georgian birth certificate, a certificate of marital status and, if applicable, divorce decisions, apostilled and certified), for registering children born to Georgian parents, and for nationality applications by residence after five years, by marriage or by descent, which the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais handles with the same document set plus the registo criminal and proof of Portuguese at A2. The Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado and the Conservatórias are strict about apostilles and about translations being certified, and they accept foreign certifications that are apostilled; where a conservador insists on certification in Portugal, our partner lawyer in Lisbon provides it. The cartão de cidadão application after nationality, and Segurança Social and Finanças registrations, use the same translated documents.
Brazil: Polícia Federal, cartórios, universities and the Brazilian embassy in Tbilisi
Georgians going to Brazil for work, study or marriage, and Brazilians registering acts involving Georgian documents, meet the tradutor juramentado at every step: the Polícia Federal for residence registration (the CRNM), cartórios for marriage, property and procurações, universities and the Ministério da Educação for revalidação of diplomas, the Receita Federal for the CPF, and courts. Every Georgian document must be apostilled in Georgia and then translated by a tradutor juramentado in Brazil; we prepare the Portuguese text, notarize it, and forward it to a partner tradutor juramentado who certifies it as a tradução juramentada in Brazilian format, which is faster and cheaper than a full translation in Brazil. The Brazilian embassy in Tbilisi handles visas, consular registration of Brazilians in Georgia and consular acts; documents submitted there in Georgian need translations, which we provide in the Brazilian variant.
Portuguese and Brazilian documents for Georgian authorities
Any Portuguese-language document used in Georgia must be translated into Georgian and notarized here. The most frequent are passaportes, cartões de cidadão, Brazilian RG and CNH and Portuguese cartas de condução (translated from a photo, no visit needed), certidões de nascimento, casamento and óbito for marriage registration and family residence permits, the certificado de registo criminal or Brazilian atestado de antecedentes criminais for residence permits, certidões de habilitações and diplomas for work permits and recognition, certidões permanentes of Portuguese companies and Brazilian contratos sociais for company registration, procurações, contratos de trabalho and extratos bancários for proof of income, and declarations from Segurança Social, Finanças or the INSS. Portuguese documents must carry the apostille of the Procuradoria-Geral da República before the translation is notarized; Brazilian ones the apostille of a cartório authorized by the CNJ. Angolan and Mozambican documents must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs there and by the Georgian consular route. We also offer e-Notary certification with a qualified electronic signature.
Certified translation without notarization, and when it is enough
Not every recipient needs the notary, the Lisbon lawyer or the tradutor juramentado. Universities for initial admission, employers, landlords, insurers and online portals accept a certified translation with our agency stamp and translator statement, which is quicker and cheaper. AIMA, the Conservatórias, Portuguese courts, the Polícia Federal, cartórios, Georgian courts, registries, the Public Service Hall and banks do not. Tell us who will receive the document and we recommend the right level; a certified translation can be upgraded to a notarized and re-certified one later without re-translating. For clients who submit everything online - AIMA's portal, university portals, the Polícia Federal's system - we issue digitally signed PDFs, and we print, stamp and courier the same file when paper is required.
