Traduzione giurata, traduzione certificata and the Georgian notarized translation

In Italy a traduzione giurata or asseverata is produced when a translator swears before a cancelliere of a tribunale or a giudice di pace that the translation is faithful, and a verbale di giuramento is attached; there is no register of sworn translators as in Germany or France, so any translator may swear, but the oath must be taken in Italy. A traduzione certificata is a translation with the translator's or agency's declaration, accepted for less formal purposes. Georgia has neither institution. The official form here is the translation notarized by a Georgian notary, who certifies the signature of a translator registered with that notary as competent in Italian.

The two systems connect in two ways. A Georgian notarized translation becomes acceptable in Italy once it carries an apostille, as a legalized foreign translation. Alternatively, for its own procedures the Italian consular office in Tbilisi can certify the conformity of a translation to the original, which is the route for visas, the dichiarazione di valore and citizenship files. We use whichever the receiving office requires.

The Italian Embassy in Tbilisi: visas, dichiarazione di valore, citizenship

The consular section handles national visas for work under the decreto flussi, ricongiungimento familiare, study, elective residence, and self-employment, as well as Schengen visas, citizenship by descent and by marriage, and the dichiarazione di valore in loco for Georgian qualifications. Its checklists require Georgian documents with apostille and Italian translation, and for many procedures the consulate certifies the translation itself, charging a consular fee per page. We prepare translations in the layout the consular office expects - faithful to the original page by page, with stamps and marginal notes rendered - and we accompany or handle the submission. For the decreto flussi, where the employer's nulla osta from the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione must be matched by the worker's documents within tight deadlines, we run these files on the express track.

Italy after arrival: Questura, Prefettura, Comune, INPS, tribunali

The Questura issuing the permesso di soggiorno, the Prefettura's Sportello Unico handling the contratto di soggiorno and the nulla osta for family reunification, and the Comune registering residence and marriages apply the same standard: translations legalized by apostille or certified by the consulate, or sworn in Italy. Comuni registering a marriage or transcribing a foreign birth are the strictest and sometimes insist on an asseverazione in an Italian tribunale; for these we forward our text to a partner in Italy who swears it, avoiding a second translation. INPS and the Agenzia delle Entrate accept certified translations of civil status and income documents for benefit, pension and codice fiscale purposes. Italian courts handling Georgian evidence, and notai handling Georgian heirs or property owners, accept apostilled Georgian notarized translations or require asseverazione depending on the tribunale.

San Marino, the Vatican and Italian-speaking Switzerland

San Marino is a Hague Apostille member with its own authorities; its offices accept apostilled Georgian notarized translations for residence, marriage and business purposes. The Vatican is not a Hague member; documents for the Holy See - mainly for canonical marriage procedures and ecclesiastical studies - are handled through the relevant diocesan office or the nunciature, and we prepare translations in the form requested. Ticino and the Italian-speaking valleys of Graubünden follow Swiss federal and cantonal practice: cantonal migration offices and civil registries take certified translations with apostille on the original, some requiring notarial certification of the translation, which our notarized version provides; the Università della Svizzera italiana accepts certified translations.

Italian documents for Georgian authorities

Any Italian-language document used in Georgia must be translated into Georgian and notarized here. The most frequent are passaporti, carte d'identità and patenti (translated from a photo, no visit needed), certificati di nascita, matrimonio and stato libero for marriage registration and family residence permits, the certificato del casellario giudiziale and carichi pendenti for residence permits, diplomi di laurea for work permits and recognition, visure camerali, atti costitutivi and statuti for company registration, procure for representatives, contratti di lavoro, buste paga and estratti conto for proof of income, and certificati INPS and cedolini pensione for retirees. Italian public documents must carry an apostille - from the Prefettura for administrative and civil status documents, from the Procura della Repubblica for judicial and notarial ones - before the translation is notarized. We also offer e-Notary certification with a qualified electronic signature for clients who need a verifiable PDF.

Certified translation without notarization, and when it is enough

Not every recipient needs the notary. Italian universities for pre-enrollment on Universitaly, employers, landlords, insurers and online portals often accept a certified translation with our agency stamp and declaration, which is quicker and cheaper. The consulate, Comuni, Questure, Georgian courts, registries, the Public Service Hall and banks do not. Tell us who will receive the document and we recommend the right level; if you later need a notarized or consular-certified version of a certified translation, we upgrade it without re-translating. For clients who submit everything online we issue digitally signed PDFs, and we print, stamp and courier the same file when paper is required.

Italian translation - frequently asked questions

Can I use a traduzione giurata from Italy for a Georgian residence permit?+
Not on its own. Georgian authorities require notarization by a Georgian notary. We can have the Italian sworn translation reviewed and signed by our registered translator and notarized locally, which is cheaper than re-translating.
What does consular certification of a translation cost and how long does it take?+
The consulate charges a fee per page under its tariff and processing takes from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the procedure. We prepare the translation so it passes on first submission and can handle the appointment.
A Comune in Italy rejected my Georgian translation. What now?+
Some Comuni insist on an asseverazione in an Italian tribunale. Send us the rejection; we forward our text to a partner in Italy who swears it, typically within a few days, without a second translation.
How long does a casellario giudiziale translation take?+
Once the apostilled certificate is with us, 1-2 hours for the notarized Georgian translation.
